2009 Thailand Summer Voluntary Program

August 31, 2009

tailand.jpgAfter 20 days of hard work, the 2009 Thailand Summer Voluntary Program had a happy and a little sentimental ending. July 17 is the last day that our UIC volunteers stayed at the Fr. Ray Foundation organization in Pattaya. They ended the program with a "Chinese Culture Festival", at which they arranged several activities, such as the Chinese Cities' Introduction and the Culture Experience Learning. Besides the disabled students and staff of the organization the festival also attracted the interest of many other foreign volunteers. The UIC students' sincere heart and service not only brought happiness to their service targets, but also affected everyone who had contact with us.

At the Fr. Ray Foundation our 10 UIC students served in 7 projects: Drop-in Center for Street Kids, Day Care Center, Orphanage, Vocational School for the Disabled, School for the Blind, Children's Home and Children's Village. Here our students could bring their joy into play, express their love and gain the happiness of being volunteers. Near the end of the program our students even canceled the entertainment arranged for us, and worked day and night to prepare well for the projects. With this kind of attitude our service was praised by our service targets and the host organization.

2009 Sichuan Summer Voluntary Program

August 31, 2009

sichuan.jpgOn May 12, 2008, a terrible earthquake struck Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province. Masses of buildings were ruined and around 100 thousands people were killed. The whole nation was involved in supporting the Wenchuan people that time. United International College (UIC), located in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, was also very active in supporting the disaster area, not only with money donations, but it also by sending groups of volunteers to serve the local people. And UIC promised to send students volunteers this summer again.

Therefore the Voluntary Service Development Committee and the Voluntary Service Development Center arranged another group of student volunteers to serve the affected people in Wenchuan. From June 28 to July 13 2009, a group of 23 students and 3 teachers organized a summer camp for local children in Shuimo Town, Wenchuan County.

2009 Shanxi Summer Voluntary Program

August 31, 2009

ppp.jpgThis summer 22 students and 4 teachers attended the Shaanxi Summer Voluntary Service Program from July 6 to July 26 2009. The group was divided into 3 teams which served Ningqiang County in the south and Heyang County in north of Shaanxi Province. During the 21 days program, we held summer camps for kids and community activities for villagers, while experiencing the village life by farm work and living together with the local families. The different interest clubs, such as music, painting, EDP games, and the village sports day attracted many children from kindergarten age to high school and even some college students, and build a deep friendship with the kids and villagers. Everybody who was involved enjoyed the program very much, and we had a wonderful time together.

Visiting USA Students join Elderly Service

May 15, 2009

may_13_service.jpg     On May 13 2009, 19 students and 2 teachers from Concordia College in Minnesota, USA, visited the Qianwu Elderly Nursing Home, in Doumen Zhuhai, along with a group of UIC students. Although it was a very hot day, everyone was in good spirits and enjoyed their afternoon with the old folks. Divided into groups the students went door to door to greet the elders with prepared gifts and cards.

Later they invited the elders to get together for some performances and games. The US students sang an American folk song, followed by a classic Cantonese song by the UIC students. Those elders who knew the song sang together with our students. After this a few games were started, the funniest of which was called "simulated bowling". A football was used as a bowling ball and water bottles replaced the bowling pins. The football was kicked by foot in the direction of the bottles, and whoever hit the most bottles won. The old folks were quite excited about the game, and happy just like children.

As the sun went to the west, the time for saying goodbye had come. Students took photos with the old folks and left the elderly home reluctantly. The service will certainly be an unforgettable memory for both the elders and the students.

Red Cross at UIC

April 28, 2009

img_4316_large.jpgOn April 22 2009 Zhuhai Red Cross visited UIC to collect blood donations and provide tuberculosis checks and information. The blood donation was organized together with the Zhuhai Blood Bank, and altogether 118 students and teachers donated blood voluntarily throughout the day.

About 100 students and teachers took part in the free tuberculosis X-ray check. Representatives of the Zhuhai Center for Disease Control and Prevention gave a speech about Tuberculosis, and a group of UIC student volunteers helped to spread hundreds of leaflets with useful information about tuberculosis.

The active participation of UIC students and teachers in the blood donation activity shows our young generation's sense of responsibility and humanity.
