WKU's American Cultural Immersion Program

This exclusive program offers international students the chance to get to know American culture through a combination of classroom and community activities.

The overall goal of the American Cultural Immersion Program is to introduce international students to American culture and provide them with the ability to confidently function within the American education system, prepare them to work professionally in their discipline in the United States, and to increase the understanding of Americans in a direct manner.

An American Studies course will be offered through WKU's new Popular Culture major in a 3-week session during WKU' s summer term (June 14 -July 5, 2010).  Participants will learn about American culture not only in the classroom, but through community activities.

Students will take part in typical summertime activities that Americans enjoy baseball, cookouts, concerts, nature outings, etc.  The purpose is to provide students with a sense of the "real" American lifestyle that might serve to counter images portrayed in movies and television.

The students will also take a non-credit Professional English Writing and Speaking course designed to improve professional English ability. 

As part of the course, students will interact with various work environments and have

the opportunity to engage with American work professionals. These experiences will expose students to the organizational culture, communication practices and collegiality within the American workplace.
