INTRODUCTION

Since the establishment of the United International College, numerous people have strongly urged the College to establish a post-graduate research studies programme to further enhance its image and international reputation. The senior management teams of the HKBU and UIC recognize the importance and advantages of this endeavour and have decided that it is now the appropriate time for both Institutions to join hands to establish a 'HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies'. In this way the two Institutions will be able to complement each other in R & D much more cost-effectively. Furthermore, it will also create numerous new research and post-graduate training opportunities for both Institutions.

The HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will be managed jointly by the HKBU and UIC via a 'HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies Board'. The Board will have the following composition: A Chairperson, a Vice-Chairperson, the Director and Deputy Director of JIRS, and two representatives (Faculty Deans or Unit/Department Heads/Programme Coordinators) from each Institution.



MISSION

To facilitate and enhance cooperation and collaboration in graduate studies, research and development between (1) HKBU & UIC, and (2) HKBU-UIC and research institutes in Mainland China and overseas.



MANAGEMENT

The daily operation of HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will be managed by a Management Committee with members to be appointed by the HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies Board. The Management Committee will decide on the strategies, rules, regulations and guidelines etc. of the HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies.

A Director will be appointed by the HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies Board to be responsible for the administrative management and day-to-day implementation of the policies of the Institute.



AWARD OF DEGREES

  1. Research Postgraduate Programmes
    The HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies is responsible for managing the MPhil and PhD Programmes for the HKBU in UIC Zhuhai [including appointment of supervisors and examiners; student admission and probation; coursework arrangement; research progress monitoring; quality assurance; arrangement of accommodation for post-graduate students; and compliance with rules and regulations set by the HKBU Graduate School. The Board has the power to appoint Fellows to further widen the scope of the research and development activities of the HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies. Only the Fellows of the Institute could be appointed as the Principal supervisor(s) or Co-supervisor (s) for the Master or Ph.D. research degrees. The Research Degree(s) will be awarded by the HKBU.
  2. Taught Postgraduate Programmes (Coursework Master's Degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas/Certificates by Coursework)
    The HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will also be responsible for managing the Taught Postgraduate Degrees/Programmes offered by the HKBU in UIC Zhuhai or UIC or jointly by HKBU & UIC (including those jointly offered by HKBU/UIC/HKBU-UIC and other research Institutes in the Mainland China or Overseas).


POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWS

The HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will provide Post-Doctoral posts for staff of HKBU and UIC. The Post-Doctoral posts will be open for competition, and the number of posts allocated by the Management Committee to the HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies each year will depend on the funds and resources available.



ORGANIZATION OF ACADEMIC CONFERENCES, SEMINARS AND MEETINGS

The HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will initiate, host, organize and manage academic conferences, seminars and meetings for HKBU, UIC or any other research institutes of international repute.



CONSULTATION WORK

The HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will carry out consultancy work for external organizations and commissioned work on project(s) approved by the Management Committee.



FUNDS

The HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will welcome donations in support of its activities. Funds received from donations/research grants or fees received from activities organized by the HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies will be used to support the operation, management and development of the Institute.UIC would be responsible for all the relevant expenses for research students activities and would not consume any financial resources of HKBU in this regard.

 



SYNOPSIS

HKBU and UIC joint hands to establish the HKBU-UIC Joint Institute of Research Studies (JIRS) in July 2008 to complement each other in research & development. It will create numerous new research and post-graduate training opportunities for both Institutions. Specifically, JIRS aims to facilitate and enhance cooperation and collaboration in graduate studies, research and development between (1) HKBU & UIC, and (2) HKBU-UIC JIRS and research institutes in Mainland China and overseas.

Research Postgraduate Programmes

JIRS is responsible for managing the MPhil and PhD Programs of HKBU in UIC. Academic staff of HKBU and UIC who are appointed as JIRS Fellows could be the Principal supervisor(s) or Co-supervisor (s) of the MPhil or PhD students stationed at UIC. The Research Degree(s) will be awarded by the HKBU.

Taught Postgraduate Programmes

JIRS will also be responsible for managing the Taught Postgraduate Degrees/Programmes offered by HKBU at UIC or jointly by HKBU & UIC (including those jointly offered by HKBU/UIC/HKBU-UIC and other research Institutes in the Mainland China or Overseas).

Other activities

JIRS will provide post-doctoral posts for HKBU and UIC. It also endeavours to initiate, host, organize and manage academic conferences, seminars and meetings for HKBU, UIC or any other research institutes of international repute. Consultancy work for external organizations and commissioned work on approved project(s) will be carried out.

JIRS welcomes donations in support of its activities. Funds received from donations/research grants or fees received from activities organized by JIRS will be used to support the operation, management and development of the Institute.
