  3. A brief introduction to each program

    2.1 Computer Science and Technology

The aim of this program is to prepare students for a career in computer science or information-technology related areas. Students will be equipped to work in industry, business etc., or to pursue post-graduate study in China or abroad. Graduates will have developed learning skills and have the confidence to meet the challenges in the rapidly changing world of information technology.

    2.2 Statistics

The aim of this program is to prepare students for a career in Statistics related areas. Students will be equipped to work in industry and business etc. or to pursue postgraduate study in China or abroad. Graduates will have developed learning skills and have the confidence to meet the challenges in the rapidly changing world of Statistics. After the completion of this program, students should have a solid and broad foundation in Statistics and the ability to tackle and solve problems related to Statistics.

    2.3 Environmental Science

This programme provides students with the relevant scientific concepts to understand the complexity of the natural environment. Students will master the methodologies needed to identify and characterize both natural and human-made environmental problems, especially those associated with rapid industrialization and urbanization; and protocols to evaluate relative risks associated with these problems. On completion of the programme, graduates should have the ability to develop and formulate management strategies, sustainable systems, and rational public policies to resolve complex environmental issues; and assist industrialists during design and production to take environmental issues into consideration.

    2.4 Food Science and Technology

The aim of the Food Science and Technology programme is to provide students with the relevant scientific principles to understand food and the food industry; the ability to apply scientific knowledge to meet the needs of industry and consumers for the production and marketing of safe and quality foods; protocols to evaluate health, safety; and the ability to develop management and business skills relevant to the food industry. The programme, being highly interdisciplinary in nature, draws on the relevant knowledge from a wide range of disciplines. Upon completion of this programme, students will achieve a level of competency in a broad area of food science and technology.

  5. The career prospects of the graduates

    3.1 Computer Science and Technology

Information technology plays an important role in driving the growth of the computer industry in China and all over the world. In China, up till now, there is still a great shortage of computer professionals: including computer analyst, application programmer, software engineering and junior software developer etc. Moreover, the Chinese Government has been pushing very hard to develop the software industry with an aim to compete and surpass India and Israel for a larger share of the IT outsourcing market. In the world of innovation, entrepreneurial businesses and venture capital there are also great demand and interests in recruiting managers well versed in IT. The above examples show that there is a great demand for IT professionals, especially in Mainland in the years to come. After graduation students can also continue with more advanced studies in the other Universities to obtain higher degrees, such as Masters or Ph.D.

    3.2 Statistics

The use of Statistics has played an increasingly important role in economic and industrial development, agricultural production, quality control and technology advancement. Students with a degree in Statistics will thus easily find positions in any of the above areas. Furthermore, in China there is still a lack of professionals in the field of Statistics, especially in Operations Research, Demography, Insurance, Business Finance, Logistics and Actuarial Science etc. Graduates in Statistics will find ample opportunities in finding a job/position in all those specialized areas as a professional statistician or researcher. Students after graduation can, of course, opt to continue to do advanced studies for Master and Ph.D. degrees.

    3.3 Environmental Science

China is becoming one of the world's fastest growing economic region. The rapid growth has led to fast expansion of cities and urban centers into the rural areas, bringing along tremendous amount of construction and industrial activities. Such fast pace of industrialization often leads to environmental degradation, which ultimately affects the health of the people and the sustainability of growth.  To ensure good environmental quality and standard of living, well-thought out environmental policies and plans for sustainable economic development are required at the central, provincial and the HKSAR government levels. Professionals well versed in the latest environmental technology know how and corporate management skills and concepts are thus in great demand. Our graduate will find plenty of job opportunities in those  areas and they will also be able to continue with more advanced studies at Masters and Ph.D. level.

    3.4 Food Science and Technology

The food industry in China has developed rapidly since the opening up of China to the world in the 1980s and the adoption of the new economic reform policies by the Chinese Government. It now constitutes one of the largest employment sectors, involving more than 10 million people. A number of factors like - the rapid development of food science and technology industries in China; an urgent need for people to understand the range of issues related to food quality, safety and the nutritional properties of food; China entering into the WTO; the rapid rise in the standard of living of the Chinese people, and the acceleration of globalization of the world economy - have led to an increased demand for well-trained food scientists and food professionals in China. The local food industry, the multinational food companies investing in China, and the government departments concerned with food production, distribution and safety etc. all have a big demand for graduates with the knowledge and skills in food science and technology, combined with an understanding of how to manage the food industry.
