Citation Guide
What¡¯s a Citation?

Citation is the bibliographical information to identify a publication (e.g. book, journal, article, and document). Citation is provided in the lists of references, footnotes, bibliographies in scholarly works. Citation usually includes the name of the (authors), title, publisher, date of publication and the source of the work.

Why do we have to cite Sources?
Citation is an important practice in academic research. Whenever you directly quote the authors¡¯ words/texts or paraphrase the author¡¯s idea, you need to cite the original source of the texts/ideas. Citation can introduce the background of your research, support your ideas/statements by other¡¯s work and demonstrate the scope and depth of your research. Readers also can trace the original source from your citation. In addition, the original work gets acknowledged from your citation.

How Do You Cite Sources?
To quote a reference, you need to put in-text parenthetic notes in the body of your paper and list a bibliography at the end of your paper. Different citation styles have different rules to cite a reference. The popular citation styles include APA, MLA, and Chicago style. Consult your lecturer or tutor which style he/she prefers to use in your assignment.
