Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC) is not just a liberal arts college in China, it is a lot more. To understand UIC better, let's go through the alphabet from A to Z. 

 

A

UIC promotes innovative liberal arts education concepts and meets international academic standards. It boasts an outstanding faculty team to guide students academically. There are also high-quality academic resources and a variety of courses in various fields to encourage in-depth interdisciplinary exchanges between teachers and students.

UIC encourages teachers and students to participate in community services and cultivate a sense of social responsibility. Even during the COVID-19 epidemic, staff, students and alumni united to make contributions to fighting the outbreak. In addition, the college has joined hands with government agencies and organisations to cooperate in areas such as food safety, elderly care services, English teacher training, computer science, culture and creativity industries and more.

UIC attaches great importance to environmental awareness and holds various ecological protection activities. For example, staff and students carry out marine conservation by cleaning up marine environments and organising bird watching activities to promote knowledge about protecting bird diversity. The college also cooperates with overseas universities to promote research on ecological environmental protection.

In 2019, over 75% of UIC graduates have continued to pursue further studies, both in China and overseas. Nearly 70% of the graduates who choose to study abroad are admitted to the top 100 universities in the world. The High Table Dinner originates from the cultural traditions of famous western universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. UIC often invites guests to share their academic views in this unique form, and at the same time enhance students' understanding of formal etiquette and western academic cultural traditions.

The modern campus of UIC is located at 2000 Jintong Road in Zhuhai. It is modern and well-equipped. The teaching buildings, Learning Resource Centre, and residential buildings are alternately arranged, which makes students' study and life more convenient and comfortable. The college also has facilities such as Cultural Creativity Clusters, laboratories, research centres and professional studios to assist staff and students in teaching and research.

UIC is the first liberal arts university in mainland China. It pays attention to the opening of students' minds, as well as the cultivation and shaping of personality, to help students become talented and valuable members of society. The small class sizes, the combination of arts and science and the mixture of Chinese and Western cultures allow students to better cultivate their comprehensive ability as well as to apply what they’ve learned.

In order to help freshmen adapt to university life more quickly, the college implements the Mentor Caring Programme. Teachers and senior students from the same programme serve as Mentors and Peer Mentors respectively, and they are the first points of contacts, helping students with their studies and careers.

UIC provides a Chinese culture and society education programme and various academic activities to help students learn the development of China's politics, economy, society and culture. Students and staff can experience the charm of Chinese traditional culture through courses offered by the Chinese Language and Culture Centre and the Whole Person Education Office in addition to the unique ceremonies that are held. These courses include Chinese philosophy, Guqin (an ancient Chinese instrument), Shedao (Chinese archery), Yayue (a type of Chinese music) and ceramics. In addition, the Research Institute for Dissemination of Chinese Culture also contributes to the promotion of Chinese culture.

UIC encourages good interdisciplinary communication, which helps to broaden the perspective of staff and students and promotes cooperation. The openness of UIC gives students the courage to explore themselves, develop the habit of independent thinking, and become talented contributors to comprehensive development and service to the society.

During their four year journey at UIC, students have to complete presentations, reading and writing assignments, quizzes, midterm and final tests, as well as Final Year Projects. Students engage in a variety of activities to help them go further on the academic road.

UIC's curriculum is set up in line with international academic standards and fulfils robust quality assurance requirements. UIC follows a strict Quality Assurance System to ensure quality of education.

UIC is student-oriented and the small classes allow the teacher to pay attention to the performance of each student. The doors of the teachers' offices at UIC are always open to the students and the communication inside and outside the classroom can help address any concerns the students have in a timely manner.

UIC provides a wealth of rewards and support for students. During the 2018-2019 semester, the total amount of scholarships awarded by the college exceeded 10 million RMB. Several outstanding alumni have also set up various scholarships at their alma mater, encouraging the students to pursue their dreams.

UIC was jointly established by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University, drawing on the advantages of the two parent institutions, which not only attaches importance to students' traditional cultural literacy, but also cultivates students' international vision. During the winter and summer vacations, the students continue to participate in international summer and winter programmes, internships or volunteer programmes.

Z

Zhuhai is adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao and is an important city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). UIC was jointly founded by a Mainland Chinese university and a Hong Kong university and established in Zhuhai, making it literally the first GBA University. UIC has actively engaged itself in local development with its educational resources.
